Where are the nail salons? Nail-specialty license density across Texas counties
Texas has 8,580 nail-specialty establishment licenses on the TDLR roster — one for every 3,647 residents. County-by-county density rankings from state licensing data.
Original analyses of the statewide TDLR cosmetology licensing dataset — 71,250 establishment license records, snapshot 2026-07-01. Every number is computed by a committed, re-runnable script from a dated public-data snapshot, with limitations stated plainly. License data is not safety data, and nothing here claims otherwise.

18.6% of the 71,250 cosmetology establishment licenses on the TDLR roster were past expiration when the state generated the file — and 13,872 more come up for renewal in the second half of 2026.
61 of Texas's 254 counties — home to 244,382 people — have no nail-specialty establishment license on the TDLR roster.
21,866 of Texas's 71,250 cosmetology establishment licenses are "Mini Establishments" — TDLR's license class for independently operated rooms or suites inside a host salon. County-level shares from state licensing data.
We snapshot the TDLR "All Licenses" open dataset (retrieved 2026-07-01; TDLR last updated it 2026-04-12), keep the cosmetology establishment classes with parseable Texas addresses, and join county populations from the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2024 estimates. All expiry math uses the dataset's own generation date. The snapshot and the analysis script are committed together, so every figure is reproducible end to end. Full methodology and limitations are on each analysis page.
